On Thursday September 21, 2017, approximately 175 members of the arts community, including exhibiting artists and special guests, gathered at the opening of the 16th edition of AOE Arts Council’s annual SELECTIONS art exhibit. All present came to show their support for local artists and to witness the presentation of the three Juror’s Choice Awards by Thomas Baribault, manager of DeSerres Centre St-Laurent and sponsor of the exhibit.
“It is fantastic to be once again participating with the AOE Arts Council to promote Ottawa’s local arts community,” says Baribault. “The artists that make up our community are solidly talented and boldly imaginative. Their incredible art deserves to be seen and bought by a much wider audience. DeSerres is honoured to be one link in the creative chain.”
The awards were given to Luc Fortier for his acrylic painting entitled Taratatanana, Oscar Jocson for his acrylic painting entitled The Wolves, and encaustic artist Anna Wagner-Ott for her work Glow from Within. The three winners of the Juror’s Choice each received a $100 gift certificate from the exhibit’s sponsor DeSerres.
To ensure fairness, a new jury is selected each year to choose the works for the upcoming show. The jury for SELECTIONS 2017 was composed of printmaker Guillermo Trejo, painter Andrew Morrow, and photographer Adrienne Herron. This group of professional artists narrowed 191 submitted pieces to the final 40 works on exhibit until October 17 in the Trinity Art Gallery at the Shenkman Arts Centre.
Visitors of all ages, members of the arts community, and the media are all invited to meet the artists at the Meet the Artists event on Sunday, October 1, from 1 to 3 p.m. as part of Culture Days at the Shenkman Arts Centre. AOE Arts Council encourages visitors to cast their vote for the People’s Choice award until October 17.
AOE Arts Council wishes to thank the generous support of our returning event sponsors: presenting Sponsor, DeSerres, and Print Sponsor, Sotek Graphics and Printing.
The SELECTIONS exhibit is also made possible with financial support from the ARTicipate Endowment Fund. Artists who sell works in the show donate 15% commission back into the fund to help other local artists.
