2014‐15 ARTicipate Grant Recipients Announced
September 02, 2014

Ottawa, Ontario – AOE Arts Council is pleased to announce the 2014‐15 ARTicipate Endowment Fund Grant recipients. A total of $15,195 in grant funding is awarded to seven artists and five art organisations across the arts spectrum. The ARTicipate Project Grants enable regional artists and art organisations access to the Shenkman Arts Centre’s professional spaces for creating and presenting their work.

“The financing is going to help reach a wider audience of people in the Ottawa region and raise a higher interest in the community for this exhibition,” says visual artist Alena Liapko who is one of five first time grant recipients. “I am very grateful and very excited that my project was selected. This will help me a lot throughout the different steps of my exhibit.”

Grant funding contributes in several meaningful ways to help artists secure rehearsal time and space, add to their creative team, promote their show or offset production costs.

For some artists, resources or access can limit the scope and nature of artistic expression. The ARTicipate Project Grants provide an opportunity for artists to push their limits and grow creatively. For others, such as groups, it can mean a much larger production that could bring their performance onto a professional stage or collaborating with more artists. For Aroha Fine Arts Dance Co, this grant will allow a new choreography and performance of professional Kathak dance to come to light. “It’s a dance that engages many artists and the ARTicipate grant will enable us to hold additional rehearsals and perform in professional dance spaces at the Shenkman Arts Centre,” says Artistic Director Anjali Patil.

Ottawa residents will certainly benefit from the variety of artistic performances and exhibits that will enrich the 2014-15 Shenkman Arts Centre calendar.

“Year after year, we see artists and groups from all disciplines apply for the grant,” says Cassandra Olsthoorn, AOE Program Coordinator. “It is gratifying to witness first-hand how the ARTicipate Endowment Fund answers the need of emerging and professional artists alike.”
