AOE Arts Council Creative Business Skills Workshops 2016

AOE Arts Council presents a spring workshop series to help artists and arts administrators at all levels of practice learn new skills, or brush up on old ones. Three categories of workshops are being offered and led by seasoned experts, Marketing, Fundraising and basics for Visual Artists.

Marketing

Breakthrough Marketing: Connecting Audiences and the Arts

Trainer: Inga Petri, Strategic Moves
Date: Tuesday May 10, 2016 @ 2 to 5 pm
Location: AOE Boardroom, 260-245 Centrum Blvd, Shenkman Arts Centre, Ottawa, K1E 0A1

In this practical workshop, Inga will guide participants through presentation, conversation and exercises toward creating effective marketing strategies and deepening audience relations.
We will explore what marketing is and how it works through real-life examples. Together, we will map the purchase decision process to specific marketing tactics and tools.
Inga will offer participants a marketing plan template customized for arts practitioners to help you get started on your own plan and implementation. Hand-outs will be supplied.
This workshop is designed for non-specialists looking for practical marketing know-how and more experienced arts marketers looking for a refresher in contemporary marketing knowledge.

Building Your Audience Through Online Marketing

Date: Tuesday May 17, 2016 @ 2 to 5 pm

In this hands-on training session, participants will gain a clear understanding of the components of an integrated web presence, and how they work together to grow their audiences and build followers.
Inga will share a customized web presence framework for the arts that you can immediately use to make decisions about where to focus your efforts towards building your audience.
Inga will demystify the usual tech talk and demonstrate:
-    How to make user experience central to your website design
-    How to use search engine optimization to make sure users can find you
-    When, how and why to integrate social media like Facebook, Twitter, Youtube and so on
-    How and when to use web, search engine and social media advertising
-    Why email marketing remains key to generating qualified leads and build relationships
-    Web metrics and evaluation
Hand-outs will be supplied.
This workshop is well-suited to those with basic web skills and will serve as a current refresher for those with experience in the online space.

About Inga:
Inga is a seasoned researcher, strategist and marketer with more than 25 years’ experience in arts and culture and diverse sectors including telecommunications, associations, international trade promotion and municipalities. Inga’s work is nationally recognized for the landmark study on The Value of Presenting:  A Study of Performing Arts Presentation in Canada (©2013) and for providing strategic insight, championing contemporary marketing practices, and delivering practical training in the arts sector. Inga operates her marketing and consulting practice from Ottawa, Ontario and Whitehorse, Yukon.

Putting together your Case for Support

Trainer: Mena Gainpaulsingh, Director, International Fundraising Consultancy
Date: June 1, 2016 @ 2 to 5 pm
Location: AOE Boardroom, 260-245 Centrum Blvd, Shenkman Arts Centre, Ottawa, K1E 0A1

A strong case for support can make all the difference between fundraising success and failure.  In this session we take a deeper dive into the creation of a great case for support.  You will learn what you need to include, the research you need to undertake to make it compelling, storytelling in your fundraising and how to use it in your program. Specifically, this session will cover:
•    What a case for support is (and what it is not!) and what goes in it
•    What research you may need to do to ensure that the document is compelling and certain to engage your target audience
•    The role of the Case for Support in helping your advocates, from staff to board members to volunteers, to stay “on message” when reaching out on your behalf
•    How the Case for Support can be used as an effective tool to support your fundraising efforts
•    Ensuring that the Case for Support appeals to the heart and the head
•    The use of storytelling in your Case for Support
•    Creating a compelling call to action that gets you results
•    Begin the process of creating your Case for Support in the session

About Mena:
Mena is a fundraising consultant specializing in strategy, individual giving, capital campaigns, grant writing, prospect research and event management. She has worked in the sector for 17 years, initially at Freedom from Torture, where she ran a capital campaign to build a new treatment centre for torture survivors.
In a voluntary capacity Mena has sat on the boards of the Institute of Fundraising, the Institute of Fundraising's National Convention 2010, the Ottawa Steering Committee for Starlight Children's Foundation and served as Co-Chair of the Fundraising Committee for Ottawa Rape Crisis Centre. Mena has delivered training around the world on strategy, major gifts international fundraising, relationship development and grant writing and runs the award-winning First Fridays Seminar series in Ottawa.
Mena is currently on the Board of the Association of Fundraising Professionals Ottawa Chapter and chairs their Fundraising Day committee.  She is dedicated to supporting the professional development of fundraisers and enjoys helping charities navigate their way through their various fundraising challenges.

About Don Monet:
Don is a community-centred Ottawa artist, curator and activist.  He concentrates his studio efforts toward landscape, photo-collage and found-object paintings.  Owner of Cube Gallery, Ottawa, now in its eleventh year, he has organized over 100 thematic group exhibitions and solo shows featuring Ottawa and National visual artists, musicians, actors and dancers. He has taught culture, communications, ethics, and audience research courses (sessionally) at the University of Ottawa. Much of his work is informed by the 13 years he lived and worked with the Gitksan and Wet’suwet’en peoples in Northern B.C.  In 1992 he published a Canadian classic: "Colonialism on Trial", a graphic documentary book following the Delgam Uukw court action of 87-91.
