Audience Development Workshop for Arts Organizations and Festivals

Does your festival want to attract bigger crowds? Do you want to sell more tickets for your next artistic production?  Do not miss this opportunity! Audience Development Expert, Denis Bertrand comes to us all the way from Sudbury to offer this workshop specifically designed for arts organizations and festivals.  It includes an introduction to audience development, looking at different audience development approaches and providing you with an 8-step audience development strategy.
Participants will work in groups to review case studies and produce a succinct audience development strategy using the 8-step process for their organization.

When: Saturday October 1, 9am to noon
Where: Orléans Star-L’Expresse Music Studio, Shenkman Arts Centre
Fee: $25 /pers or $40/organization or festival (max 2 people) for members of AOE and Ottawa Festival $50/pers for non-members

About Denis Bertrand
Over the last 30 years, Denis has held senior management positions at Théâtre Action (provincial theatre arts service organization), Ontario’s Office of Francophone Affairs, TFO (Ontario’s French-language educational television network), La Cité collégiale (Eastern Ontario’s French-language community college) and the Fédération des communautés francophones et acadienne du Canada (national umbrella organization for francophone communities located outside Québec). He is a former Chair of Ottawa’s Théâtre la Catapulte, a former member of the Board of Directors of Ottawa’s La Nouvelle Scène and the former National Coordinator of the Arts and Learning Project at the Canada Council for the Arts, the Canadian Commission for UNESCO and the Canadian Conference of the Arts. He has written and implemented numerous planning and communications strategies. Along with his colleagues at 50 Carleton, he has developed the firm’s Integrated Audience Development© strategy for arts organizations. He has led numerous workshops on the subject and worked with many arts organizations interested in acquiring their own audience development strategy. He currently writes a blog on the issue at www.developpezvotreauditoire.com

Promo 101

This workshops is for artists wishing to learn how to better promote themselves. The workshop will cover media relations and print promotions. The following essentials will be discussed: biography, cv, artist statement, portfolio, promo cards, business cards and more.

When: Wednesday October 12, 2011 7-9pm

How to Photograph Your 2D Art

This workshop will focus on the basics of taking photos of your two dimensional art for use on the web or in print.  We will cover:

  • Equipment basics: what kind of camera and lighting will you need to take pictures of your work
  • Camera and lighting set up: the optimal placement and set up of your photographic equipment
  • Post processing: basic tweeks and adjustments you can do once you've shot your piece

When: Tuesday October 18, 2011, 7-9 pm

How to Approach a Gallery for Exhibition

Get useful pointers on how to approach a gallery from professional artist Susan Valyi and from Wallspace  Gallery co-owner Trish Barr.  You will receive a list of Ottawa and surrounding area galleries.

Grant Writing for Visual Artists

This workshop is for visual artists who would like to apply for funding for arts creation and for exhibition assistance. The purpose of the workshop is to break down application forms in doable parts and to give you tips on what type of information to include in your applications.

Fall 2011 Workshops in East Ottawa Locations
Arbor Gallery in Vankleek Hill in partnership with the AOE Arts Council has received a grant from the Ontario Ministry of Tourism and Culture* to use the AOE workshop model to offer workshops to visual artists in locations east of Ottawa. Because they have committed to offer 6 workshops before February 2012, 2011

AOE Fall roster offers an unusual amount of workshops specifically for visual artists.  Our upcoming spring roster will focus on workshops for other artistic disciplines represented in our membership.
