More Info

Spreading Roots focuses on community green-space and intergenerational arts. This theatre-based project aims to draw together elders, children, youth and adults to create, through theatre, dance and song, a pageant celebrating their existing neighbourhood trees and culminating by welcoming and planting new trees. Along with theatre artists and environmentalists, community members will create this performance event that recognizes their neighborhood trees as members of their community. The project takes its inspiration from the medieval “pageant play”, incorporating forms of local culture – a church choir, a senior’s dance company, children making puppets. Community members will be lead through the creative process with a series of workshops in research, artistic creation (masks, puppetry, movement and drama) and rehearsal/performance. This process will reveal how each community values trees specific to their neighbourhood. Some will be concerned with environmental protection, while others might find trees representing their childhood or important gathering places.
