Art Place : Professional Artist-In-Residence Program
Art Place : Artist-in-residence program
Art Place is a 3-year community outreach program of AOE Arts Council, funded the Ontario Trillium Foundation, the Community Foundation of Ottawa, Trinity Development Foundation, Ontario Arts Council, City of Ottawa – Community Art and Social Engagement Program (CASE), the Danbe Foundation and the Harry P. Ward Foundation.
In its second year, the new social practice professional artist-in-residence program will enable nine jury selected artists and groups of artists the opportunity to offer unique free-of-charge artistic services in collaboration with community sites across the city of Ottawa.
Each artist or arts group will be paired with a non-profit organization for a period of 8 to 12 weeks. The 2015-2016 projects will be created through various art practices to include theatre, dance, music, storytelling and visual art. Art Place challenges artists to work in spaces where there is a gap in artistic programming, such as immigration service facilities, community centres, and seniors’ residences. Art Place will bring together different participants to work collaboratively and generate awareness for socially-driven issues.
The Arts Council believes in the power of the arts to transform lives.
Many residents in Ottawa do not have access to a creative outlet. The Arts Council is filling this gap by providing opportunities to professional artists and arts groups whose artistic skills and programming engage with the public in meaningful ways. The Arts Council is motivated by the program’s ability to create more opportunities for artists to share their art practice with new audiences in non-traditional settings. Each art project amplifies a new voice to communities across Ottawa on social issues that matter.
